Duration: | December 2015- November 2018 |
HOBBIT aims at abolishing the barriers in the adoption and deployment of Big Linked Data by European companies, by means of open benchmarking reports that allow them to assess the fitness of existing solutions for their purposes. These benchmarks are based on data that reflects reality and measures industry-relevant Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) with comparable results using standardized hardware.
Methodology
WP1 – Requirement Elicitation and Community Building Leader: iMinds, Start month: 1, End month: 36 Objectives: Gather KPI’s from companies, Engage with companies and get the association running by the end of the project.
WP2 – Benchmarking Platform Leader: INFAI, Start month: 1, End month: 36 Objectives: Main aim is to development of the architecture upon which the benchmarks will be based. In particular, we will implement interfaces for data generators, task generators and evaluation measures.
WP3 – Benchmarks I: Generation and Acquisition Leader: INFAI, Start month: 7, End month: 30 Objectives: The purpose of this WP is to provide benchmarks for the generation and acquisition of data.
WP4 – Benchmarks II: Analysis and Processing Leader: FORTH, Start month: 7, End month: 30 Objectives: The purpose of this WP is to provide benchmarks for the linking and analysis of data KPI’s of the big data value chain.
WP5 – Benchmarks III: Storage and Curation Leader: OL, Start month: 7, End month: 30 Objectives: This WP is focusing on the benchmarks related to storage and curation systems.
WP6 – Benchmarks IV: Visualization and Services Leader: IAIS, Start month: 7, End month: 30 Objectives: The aim of this WP is to provide benchmarks for the visualisation and service part of the big data value chain.
WP7 – Evaluation Campaigns Leader: NCSR, Start month: 1, End month: 34 Objectives: Purpose of this WP is organise benchmarking campaigns for each of the benchmarks.
WP8 – Dissemination Leader: FORTH, Start month: 1, End month: 36 Objectives: Primary goal is to exploit and disseminate the HOBBIT results. Build a community in order to have a sustainability of the project after the official project end.
WP9 – Project Management Leader: INFAI, Start month: 1, End month: 36 Objectives: Ensure project results, monitor progress and quality and run the administrative tasks. Optimise collaboration among the partners.

Results
The HOBBIT evaluation platform is build upon the open-source platform GERBIL benchmarking platform, which resulted from collaboration between 8 institutions (including the Big Data vendor Unister) across Europe. This platform will ensure that:
- The benchmarks are easy to use.
- New benchmarks can be easily created and added to the platform by third parties.
- The evaluation can be scaled out to large datasets and on distributed architectures.
- The publishing and analysis of the results of different systems can be carried out in a uniform manner across the different benchmarks.
