8th International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis (ISPA 2013)

Trieste, Italy

September 4-6, 2013

INTRODUCTION

Cultural heritage as the mirror of the world and its history, embodies the symbolic value of cultural identities and is a fundamental reference for the modern society. The various elements of the cultural heritage constitute a receptacle of memory which has to be bestowed for the benefit of future generations. Therefore, it is an extremely important task to devise methods and tools that may provide effective protection for the cultural heritage and that can assist universal virtual access to valuable museum objects.

Advances in multimedia technology and the availability of digital imaging tools have fostered the development of various image processing techniques for the analysis, visualization, restoration, archival, and preservation of cultural heritage artworks.

The goal of this special session is to bring together researchers and practitioners working in the area of Digital Imaging in Cultural Heritage. We are soliciting original contributions, which address a wide range of theoretical and practical issues related to the application of digital image processing techniques to various aspects of cultural heritage including, but not limited to:

+ Color and multispectral image processing for fine arts,

+ Virtual reconstruction and restoration of artworks,

+ Analysis and image reproduction of ancient artworks,

+ Mobile technologies for cultural heritage,

+ Methodologies for digitization of museum objects,

+ Virtual and augmented reality and visualization techniques,

+ Visual data acquisition, representation, modeling, and manipulation,

+ Image analysis tools for artwork diagnosis and restoration,

+ Novel web-based cultural heritage applications,

+ Image indexing and retrieval in multimedia databases,

+ Imaging and compression methods for document analysis and preservation,

+ Watermarking applications and protection of artwork digital reproductions,

+ Multimodal human computer interaction,

+ Computer graphics and animation for education, entertainment, and training in cultural heritage
