INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON SPATIAL, TEMPORAL, AND SPATIO-TEMPORAL DATA MINING (STDM'08) October 26, Salvador, Brazil in conjunction with the 19th Brazilian Symposium on Artificial Intelligence (SBIA'08) WebSite: http://www.inf.ufrgs.br/stdm08/ SCOPE: Spatial and temporal data have become very common in the recent years, and huge amounts of such data are stored in spatial, temporal, or spatio-temporal databases. These huge collections of data often hide possibly novel and interesting knowledge. Conventional systems, in general, do not provide the complete support for data mining and knowledge discovery. Therefore, spatio-temporal data mining is an emerging research area that is dedicated to the development of novel algorithms, methodologies, and tools for the successful analysis of large spatial, temporal, and spatio-temporal datasets. A sequence of workshops in this domain has demonstrated the relevance of the topic, which is a growing and active research field. (PKDD-workshop on Mining Spatio-Temporal Data (MSTD) in 2005, ICDM-workshop on Spatial and Spatio-temporal Data Mining (SSTDM) in 2006, ICDE-workshop on Spatio-Temporal Data Mining (STDM) in 2007, and ICDM-workshop on Spatial and Spatio-Temporal Data (SSTDM) in 2007). The SBIA-workshop on Spatial, Temporal, and Spatio-temporal Data Mining aims to disseminate this research field in Brazil, and bring together experts in data mining, analysts of spatial and temporal data, as well as knowledge engineers and domain experts from different application areas. TOPICS OF INTEREST: This workshop will focus on basic research (from theory to tools and algorithms) and applicative scenarios for knowledge discovery from datasets containing temporal, spatial or spatio-temporal information. The goal of the workshop is to promote and publish research on the following topics, which are not restrictive to: * Algorithms for spatial, temporal and spatio-temporal data mining; * Techniques and tools for mining trajectories of moving objects; * Semantics in spatial and temporal data mining; * Spatio-temporal reasoning and ontologies in spatial and temporal data mining; * Mining temporal and spatio-temporal data at different granularity levels; * Uncertainty in spatial and temporal data mining; * Applications and case studies of spatial, temporal, and spatio-temporal data mining; * Preprocessing and post-processing techniques for knowledge discovery from spatial, temporal, and spatio-temporal information; * Spatio-temporal data mining query languages; * Sequential spatial, temporal and spatio-temporal data mining; * Analysis of transportation data; * Mining census and GIS data; * Mining meteorological data; * Spatial or temporal data mining for medical and biological data; WORKSHOP ORGANIZERS: CHAIRS: Dr. Vania Bogorny, UFRGS, Brazil Prof. Dr. Hui Xiong, Reuters, USA CO-CHAIRS: Prof. Dr. Luis Otavio Alvares, UFRGS, Brazil Dr. Chiara Renso, KDD Laboratory, Italy PROGRAM COMMITTEE (to be completed): - Alessandra Rafaeta, Venezia University, Italy - Baris kazar, Oracle, USA - Christine K?rner, Fraunhofer Institute, Germany - Edson Melanda, USP ? S?o Carlos, Brazil IMPORTANT DATES: Paper submission: June 15, 2008 Notification to authors: July 20, 2008 Camera ready: August 5, 2008 Workshop Date: October 26, 2008 INFORMATION FOR AUTHORS AND SUBMISSION GUIDELINES All submitted papers should be written in English, in PDF format, and Springer-Werlag Style (http://www.springer.com/sgw/cda/frontpage/0,11855,5-164-2-72376-0,00.html), with no more than 10 pages. Acceptance will be based on relevance, technical quality, originality, and clarity of presentation. Accepted papers will be published in the 19th SBIA workshop proceedings. All articles will be reviewed by at least 2 referees, in a double-blind review process. Papers which are not anonymous will be *excluded* from the reviewing process. Paper registration and submissions will be handled using the JEMS system, which will be open for registration and submission from May 15, 2008. The address is: JEMS system address (https://jems.sbc.org.br/) Submission is a three-step process. In a first step, authors are required to register in JEMS (note that only 1 registration is needed if you submit more than 1 paper). After registering as author the login data will be sent to the specified email address. These data must be used to access the system. In a second step, authors have to register their paper (click the submit paper button in JEMS). The authors are asked in this step to specify the name of the authors, the paper title, its topics and the paper category (regular, student: the first author is a student or not). The system will then assign a tracking ID to each submission, which is sent to the contact author. The deadline for paper registration is June 15, 23:55 BRST. The third step consists on uploading the paper. This step can be done with the registering step. For those authors who prefer to upload their papers after registering, the tracking ID must be used. The deadline for paper uploading is June 15, 23:55 BRST. We will only accept files in PDF format. Please do not try to upload other formats, they will be rejected by the system. Note also that we only accept electronic submissions through JEMS. Please do not send papers directly to the PC-chairs. Submissions sent by regular courrier or by email will not be considered.
